Angel Eyes by Shannon Dittemore

That moment when you are at the end of a really good book and you realize it is just the first story of a series and that you have to wait until early 2013 for the sequel… argh!

Last night I finished reading a book titled Angel Eyes written by Shannon Dittemore, published by Thomas Nelson (a copy of which I received a free Kindle version through a website called BookSneeze.Com in exchange for my honest review of same).

In short, I loved this book and I’ll tell you why.
Having read and re-read the Twilight series (I know, I know… the ultimate guilty pleasure right?), I couldn’t help but catch an undertone of Twilight-esqueness in the first several pages as the author, Shannon Dittemore set the scene with an angst-ridden teen-age girl having to move back home with her father to a dreary little town. The rain, the cloudy cold climate, the strange handsome boy all were completely reminiscent of the beginnings of the Twilight saga. I suspect the author realized what she was doing and even intentionally set that type of tone, even making a few well-placed sarcastic Twi-references.

However, several pages in to the book, it’s clear we are not dealing with sparkly vampires and hunky werewolves. No we are delving in to the spiritual realm. The author cleverly weaves this fictional tale, using popular literary style and good old fashioned Biblical truths to create a story packed with suspense and action, including fight scenes between angels and demons as well as unexpected child heroes. Once I started to read the book, it was hard to stop reading it because of the suspenseful storyline. In addition to this being a really good story, the author illustrates so vividly that when we see with our “Angel Eyes” the tools that our enemy uses to entrap us, things like fear, greed, anger, etc., once we see those tools for what they really are, we will make the obvious choice to stay as much in the light and away from darkness as possible and wish to bring others into the light as well.

Much like the Twilight series, Angel Eyes is a book that a mother or her teenage daughter will enjoy all the same. I would recommend this book just based upon the action-filled storyline. The bonus in this book for me is that while I was being entertained by the book, I was also being ministered to by the Biblical truths woven into the fictional tale. I eagerly anticipate the sequel to this wonderfully written tale.
